SONY could trump every other phone maker on the market when it comes to cameras – at least in terms of image size.
The Japanese tech giant’s highly anticipated Sony Xperia XZ4 is tipped to boast an enormous 52-megapixel snapper when it launches later this month.
Apple and Samsung are expecting a major new Sony smartphone to arrive during the annual MWC 2019 tech show in Barcelona in late February.
This handset is supposedly going to feature a large 6.5-inch screen and Qualcomm’s powerful new Snapdragon 855 chipset.
But a new report from Japanese tech site Sumahoinfo claims that the phone will also come equipped with a 52-megapixel camera.
This trumps the iPhone XS (12 megapixels), Samsung Galaxy S9 (12 megapixels), and the Huawei Mate 20 Pro (40 megapixels).
However, it’s worth noting that megapixel count a phone camera offers doesn’t actually mean you’re getting a better picture.
Megapixels refers to the number of pixels – the tiny dots of colour and light – contained in an image.
The more pixels in an image, the more detail can be crammed into it.
Increasing megapixel count was hugely important in the early days of mobile phone photography, but anything above 8-megapixels to 12-megapixels is just fine in the modern age.
After all, it’s entirely possible for a 12-megapixel camera to take a far better image than a 52-megapixel camera.
The size of the sensor, the type of lens, and many other factors impact how detailed a photograph is.
It’s no use having millions of extra pixels if the quality of the image you’re capturing is very poor.
But if Sony can marry excellent image capture with high-pixel snaps, it could have a winning camera on offer.
Of course, Sony hasn’t actually confirmed any details about its new smartphone just yet.
However, the company is hosting a special event for journalists on Monday, February 25 at 7.30pm.
It’s expected that the Sony Xperia XZ4 will be announced during the event.
Sony will be facing stiff competition in 2019 however, as we’re expecting a host of powerful rival phones to launch this year.
These long-awaited mobiles include the Samsung Galaxy S10, the Samsung folding phone, and Apple’s iPhone 11.
